Lecture: Rooted in the soil: Cottage Gardens & Allotments in Ireland since 1750, Jonathan Bell & Mervyn Watson.
Jonathan and Mervyn will talk about the cultivation of vegetables and fruit, and keeping of livestock in Irish cottage gardens and urban allotments since the mid-eighteenth century and the socio-political attitudes towards them.
Jonathan Bell was Head Curator in The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum until his retirement in 2006. He has published a number of books on the history of Irish farming.
