2014 is the UN 20th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family and to celebrate, the theme for National Heritage Week 2014 is 'Family … generations exploring heritage together'.

National Heritage Week is a wonderful platform for families to come together to get involved in a wide range of activities as a family. This year we want to encourage families, young and old, to get out and connect with the heritage that is ingrained in all of us. For the older generation, the week is an opportunity to share their experiences and knowledge of Ireland’s heritage with children and grandchildren, in particular reflecting on the changes that have taken place over the years. For families of all ages, it is a chance to take a break from the daily grind and explore the hidden treasures of our heritage, whether it is our built, cultural or natural heritage.

Over 1700 events nationwide, ranging from guided nature and archaeological walks, lectures, tours of historical buildings, food fairs, music, dance, storey telling, historic gardens, historical re-enactments, wildlife excursions, whale watching and more, will take place throughout Ireland during the week. Many events are FREE and National Heritage sites offer concession rates during the week. For a full event listing see www.heritageweek.ie download the free smartphone app or pick up a copy of the National Event Guide, now available at your local library or tourist office.

Heritage Week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council in conjunction with the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government with support from the Office of Public Works and Fáilte Ireland.

Hermitage to Harlem: Pearse in America, 1914

Start Date 02 Mar 2014
End Date 31 Aug 2014
Times 9.30am - 5.30pm (closed Tuesdays)

'From A Hermitage to Harlem: Pearse in America, 1914’ marks the centenary of Patrick Pearse’s visit to the United States.

Patrick Pearse travelled to the USA in 1914 with the intention of promoting his educational philosophy, but chiefly as a fund-raising trip for the school. In America Pearse was supported by the exiled Fenian, John Devoy, and the Irish-American organisation, Clan na Gael.  Pearse's association with this group had a radicalising effect on Pearse and he returned to Ireland energised and more fully committed to the principle of armed rebellion.

Among the items and images on display in the exhibition is a silhouette of Pearse which was made when he was standing at the top of the Woolworth Building, the tallest building in the world when he visited in April 1914. Other noteworthy items include letters written by Eugene Cronin, a young American boy who returned with Pearse to become a pupil in St. Enda’s. In an early letter to his aunt he wrote of his homesickness saying "if Ma don't come right away and take me back I'll die". However, his later letters show that he settled in well, and came to love the school. Also included are several letters Pearse wrote to a Miss McKenna. He had stayed with her family in Harlem for most of his visit. Just to and a half weeks before the Rising he wrote to her saying ‘I am telling you the literal truth when I say that I was never so happy anywhere away from home, or felt so much at home, as during the two and a half months or so I spent with you in 144th Street.

From A Hermitage to Harlem: Pearse in America, 1914 runs at the Pearse Museum, St. Enda's Park, Rathfarnham from 2nd March to 31st August, 9.30am - 5.30pm (closed Tuesdays). Admission free.
